ETRELA project moves forward: First seminar launches with academic ambassadors on economics of renewable energy

We are excited to announce a milestone in the IKI-project “ETRELA”: the launch of our first seminar! This marks the beginning of the implementation phase, aimed at strengthening renewable energy and energy education across Latin America.

The seminar follows a two-phase structure. It begins with the ETRELA Online Academy, providing participants with first-hand knowledge through a flexible, digital learning platform. This will be followed by an in-person training in Quito, Ecuador, hosted by the project's implementation lead OLADE, where selected Academic Ambassadors from the ETRELA partner universities will gather for an intensive session focused on the Economics of Renewable Energy.

The Academic Ambassadors play a key role in ETRELA’s vision. After completing the training, they are expected to bring their new knowledge and resources back to their universities. There, they will integrate these insights into academic programs and activities, ensuring students benefit directly from the enhanced capacity in renewable energy economics.

With this first seminar, ETRELA takes a concrete step toward empowering academic communities and advancing the energy transition in the region. We look forward to sharing more updates as our exciting journey begins.

Mongolian delegation exploring german best practices in building retrofit and heat tariffs

To support Mongolia's energy transition, GIZ and RENAC organized a 5-day study tour for decision-makers from national, municipal, district, and community levels. The program showcased best practices in serial renovation, large-scale residential refurbishment, and energy efficiency in buildings and district heating.

Participants learned about Germany’s building sector and regulatory framework. Kompetenzzentrum Kommunale Wärmewende (KWW) and dena highlighted municipal heat planning and introduced support services and digital tools. QUNDIS GmbH presented heat cost allocators and remote readout solutions. Nahwärme-eichkamp.berlin eG shared their community-driven approach to modernizing district heating networks. The group also visited Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband e.V and KfW Bank Group, exploring energy consultancy and financial support mechanisms like loans and green bonds.

RENAC will host another Mongolian delegation in less than three weeks. This time the focus will be on the integration of renewable energy technologies into the existing power grids and carbon markets.

Building skills for Panama's Green Hydrogen Market

Commissioned by GIZ RENAC conducted a “Capacity needs assessment and capacity building strategy for the Green Hydrogen (H2v) economy and its derivatives in Panama”. The results of the study have been presented at a high level workshop in Panama City in March 2025.

The study outlines a comprehensive capacity-building strategy to develop Panama’s green hydrogen economy by building capacity in education, training, and regulatory alignment, with a focus on maritime applications such as hydrogen storage, transport, and ship maintenance. It emphasizes workforce development through vocational and academic training, regulatory alignment, and public-private partnerships, with a strong focus on gender inclusion and international collaboration. A phased roadmap from 2025 to 2032+ outlines short-, medium-, and long-term milestones to position Panama as a regional hub for hydrogen innovation and training in the maritime sector.
